Men and women should be uniformly distributed. When there are tables in the room, if possible make the men sit in front of the table legs so their legs are comfortable, and for women make sure the opposite is the case. You can use name printouts to designate each persons seat. Print on both sides so that when entering the room the person can see where they are to sit even when the back of the desk and name paper is facing the door. When conducting learning sessions for small groups, space to approach each audience member is preferable.
